In the eighth grade, Cherry
Sutton painted her first work of art. Her
brush strokes painted a big white house
It was framed and hung in her school.
Cherry went on to take art courses in high
school where she was elected president of
the art club. Upon graduation in 1973, she
decided to pursue a career in cosmetology,
thinking it would be the most financially
Cherry opened her salon and became a
successful cosmetologist in Kinston, NC.
Never losing her passion for art,
she hand painted crafts to sell in her
Thirty years after she created that first
painting, she returned to the school to
find it still hanging on the walls. As she
studied her work, she thought if at
thirteen she could create a painting that
her school still cherished, with focus, she
could do even better now.
With her daughter now in college, Cherry had the time to take her painting seriously.
She reconnected with her high school art teacher and also sought the advice of her
other-in-law, a well respected artist in the community. Cherry began using all of her
free time to pursue her passion.
In 2005, Cherry and her husband relocated to Emerald Isle, NC. With more time
devoted to painting and her skill set sharpened, she began to sell her paintings. She
was sought out to paint portraits as well as local landscapes and still life’s.
Now living in Belhaven, NC, Cherry is happily retired from cosmetology, but still
turning out beautiful works of art. Thanks to a junior high school art project, Cherry’s
art in now flourishing. She is proud that her art can be found hanging on the walls of
those who cherish it and considers her new career a great happiness that she can
continue to grow in.
